The third of the islands of the Saronic Gulf is also a very popular weekend destination, mainly visited by Athenians and preferred by families, due to the many children friendly beaches and pretty seaside villages which offer accommodation in traditional studios and rooms to rent. It becomes very crowded during the summer time, however, there are also more distant and quiet locations to visit. The main town has many elegant neoclassical buildings, hotels, a long port promenade and a big variety of cafes, bars and good restaurants and tavernas. The ancient Temple of Athena Aphaia and the ghost town of Paleochora are certainly worth visiting and a day trip to the lovely island of Agistri is definitely recommended. Aegina is mostly famous for its pistachio production.
The duration of the trip from Athens Piraeus Port by regular ferry is about 1 hour and 15 minutes and the trip with Flying Dolphins takes about 35 minutes.
