Zakynthos, also known as Zante and referred to as “Fiorio di Levante” by Venetians, as there are over 7,000 types of flowers to be found here, is the third largest island of the Ioanian Sea. Visitors will encounter the Venetian architectural influence in the main town and surrounding areas and the island has extended sandy beaches with turquoise waters, forests and charming traditional villages. The locals make a continuous effort to protect the two endangered animal species of Zakynthos, the Caretta Caretta sea turtle and the Monachus Monachus seal.
There are no ferryboats available from Athens Piraeus Port to Zakynthos. Ferries to this destination only depart from Killini, a port town on the western side of the Peloponnese and the trip lasts about 1 hour. During the summer season, there are ferries between Zakynthos and Kefalonia but you may also travel by plane, the flight is approximately 40 minutes.
