Sounio, known as Kavokolones, is a rocky peninsula, located at the southernmost point of Attica, at the end of the Athenian Riviera and some 69 km from Athens. The area has been inhabited since prehistoric times and tombs of the early Bronze Age were found (3000 years BC) in the cape. As of the 8th century B.C. the worship of Poseidon and Athena began to develop in this opulent area, due to the metal findings.
The famous temple of Poseidon (the Acropolis of Sounio), is an astonishing specimen of the classical period and was built between 444 and 440 B.C. on the ruins of an archaic temple, and was considered to be a sacred place, especially for sailors.
The name derived from either the verb “save”, or from “sounos” which means silver since the region had silver. In later years, the wider area was declared a national park due to its environmental value. Sounio is famous for its beautiful sunset.
