Hydra

Hydra is located between Poros and Spetses and is one of the most picturesque and sophisticated islands of the Saronic Gulf. It is particularly popular due to its close distance to Athens, only 2 hours by boat, and thus a preferred weekend destination during the summer period. Cars and motor vehicles are strictly prohibited, so transportation is conducted by foot, by boat or donkey rides. In fact, the donkeys are a very characteristic feature of the island.

Hydra town is surrounded by green hills and graceful stone mansions and offers great hiking paths leading to the scenic monasteries located on the countryside of the island. The beaches in the region consist of small bays with crystal clear, turquoise and emerald green waters. Aghios Nikolaos, Bitsi, Vlichos and Kaminia are the most beautiful ones to visit.

Accommodation has quite developed in recent years, offering visitors a variety of appealing hotels, boutique hotels and guesthouses with attention to detail. The beautiful port of the island seems ideal for pleasant walks on the long promenade, for enjoying the superb local cuisine and for having a drink at the pretty little bars. There are frequent ferry connections with Athens, a journey of 2 hours, with Poros, Spetses and Ermioni in the Peloponnese, a 20 minute boat ride.
