Kythira

Located on the southern side of the Peloponnese and quite distant from the other Ionian islands, Kythira is a sheltered island with a very relaxing atmosphere. The Venetian architecture is particularly apparent in the main town Chora, which provides a breathtaking view of the Aegean Sea. Wonderful beaches, pretty villages in Medieval style, charming monasteries and you may even find ghost villages to explore.

The island offers a variety of accommodations, mostly small seaside hotels, traditional holiday apartments and rooms to rent. The Venetian Castle above the main town and the small church inside the cave of Aghia Sofia are certainly worth a visit.

The fastest way to travel to Kythira is by plane from Athens, a 40 minute flight.  Alternatively, you drive to the Peloponese and take the boats from the ports of Gytheion or Neapoli, a 5 hour drive from Athens and the ferry crossing takes approximately 1 hour and 15 minutes.
