Crete

Crete is the prevalent island of Greece and the largest in the Aegean Sea. An extremely popular destination all year through due to the perfect weather conditions and ideal for a big variety of water sports and sports activities, such as canyon hiking and trekking in beautiful mountain regions and picturesque valleys. Magnificent beaches set in amazing sceneries and the famous tropical seashores of Balos, Elafonissi and Falassarna are very impressive.

Worth visiting are the Minoan palaces, the picturesque Venetian towns, the Medieval castles, the Ottoman mosques and the Byzantine monasteries. The island’s excellent traditional gastronomy combined with the native hospitality make it a paradise for food and wine lovers and the Cretan cuisine is one of the finest in Greece.

Crete is divided in four regions, Chania and Rethymno on the western side and Heraklion and Lassithi on the eastern side. The northern shores of the island are more developed, while the southern seaside maintains a more secluded and calm environment.

The journey from Athens Piraeus Port to Crete by ferryboat takes approximately 7 to 8 ½ hours, depending on the selected routes. The flight from Athens takes about 55 minutes.
