Faliro was named after Nautilus Faliro, a local hero of the time of Theseus.
Prehistoric Faliro seems to correspond to the current Palaio Faliro, since there are many documented references to the Faliro area throughout the centuries.
In the 20th century, this district began to stand out because of its exceptional location, thus becoming a suburb with many summer houses of rich families. After 1974, several expatriates from Istanbul settled down permanently in Palaio Faliro, making it a very vibrant area with their presence.
At the same time, commercial development took place due to the growth of its population towards the South districts of Athens and it consequently became one of the regions with the highest prices per square meter.
It offers grand beaches and is a preferred destination for swimming, particularly the Edem area, which is to be found next to the Marina of Alimos. A number of scenic neoclassical mansions, fine examples of the 19thcentury architecture, have remained along the coast line of Palaio Faliro.
